Life in Umbria

MONTONE

Of all the towns in the Upper Tiber Valley, Montone stole our hearts long ago. This enchanting hilltop village is a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of more touristy towns. Its romantic streets will seduce you into hours of walking and exploring and you will soon become an insider in a medieval city where time seems to stand still. Montone is simply magical.

Unlike Città di Castello, you will be inspired to write poetry after walking the streets. Each narrow stone street and turn holds extraordinary pleasure for the soul… a garden, a passageway, an intricately designed doorway. About 1500 people live inside the stone walls of Montone and life seems to gravitate to the main piazza where you will find a bank, bars, restaurants and small shops. The views of the Upper Tiber Valley from Montone are simply breathtaking and the fresh air will give you a sense of calm and well-being.

Sitting 482 meters above sea level, Montone isn't a tourist town but it welcomes and proudly assists any visitors who do pass through. Very little information can be found on this gem of a village but, in recent years, a little film festival, called the Montone Film Festival, has put Montone on the map of film lovers all over Europe. In addition to the Montone Film Festival - usually held the first weekend in July (see our information here) - Montone has some other wonderful festivals throughout the year.

We rank Montone high on our list of places to visit - especially if you are in search of peace, beauty and inspiration.
